Goose Down Bedding

With all of the goose down bedding out on the market these days how do we know what is the best to choose?

What goose down is best for bedding? Let’s explore these different options together.

There are 4 different main types of geese that are used for goose down.

1.  Canadian Goose Down

Canadian Goose down is well known as the best goose down available, for goose down bedding throughout the world.

A Canadian goose down is a minimum of 700 fill power. This means it is very consistant because it comes from the same geese all of the time.

2.  Hungarian Goose Down

Hungarian goose down has been used throughout the world for many years. It is of superior quality and very consistent.

3 Polish Goose Down

Much of the Polish goose down is hand harvested. Some of these geese are “live plucked” so, if you are concerned about the humane treatment of these geese, Just beware of this practice.

4 Chinese Goose Down

Chinese goose down is very brittle. Since this breed is the smallest of the domestic raised geese it is lucky if you can get fill power of 500. This is the fill they use in the cheaper products on the market today.

Now we know what types of goose down goes into our goose down bedding. With this information we are now better equipped to make an informed decision when buying a luxury down comforter or a standard grade comforter.

Why Goose Down Bedding ?

down-bedding-41Goose down bedding is natural and lets the moisture out when you are sleeping thus keeping you at regulated temperature. Synthetic bedding is just that synthetic. It consists of nylon and cotton fibers that are weaved together. It will not breathe as the natural down will, so synthetic will keep all of the moister in and cause you to wake up sweaty and clamy during the night.

Goose down bedding is light and fluffy and will remain that way for a lifetime with proper care. Synthetic bedding will eventually mat up and go flat causing you to have to replace it every two to three years.

The comfort of snuggling under goose down bedding and having it wrap around you is like nothing you have experienced before. It cradles you and is light weight, warm and fluffy. Unlike the synthetic bedding that is stiff feeling, heavy and you have to pull it into place.

Down Filled Bedding

1. What’s the difference between down and feather ?

Down and feathers are two completely different structures. A feather is an external covering on waterfowl and other birds, consisting of a two-dimensional shaft or quill and barbs. Feathers are not necessarily inferior to down, they are functionally different, offering support rather than warmth.
2. What if I’m allergic to down or feathers?
Studies show that less than 1% of the population is allergic to down and feathers. Down is protein, just like human hair. Many people who believe that they are allergic to down and feathers are actually allergic to the dust and dirt that can accumulate in bedding over time.

Many manufacturers offer hypoallergenic down products with anti-microbial protection, which assures purity and freshness for the life of the product.
3. Is all down equal?
Down can be gray or white, without a difference in quality. But, in general, goose down is superior to duck down because the birds are grown to a larger size, yielding larger down clusters.
