Comforter Down – Not just for the North

down-bedding-5There are many different bed sizes on the market, although queen size is the most popular. Remember that there can also be different lengths for the same size bed so know what you need. If you don’t know the size of your bed you are going to have to measure.

The large clusters give you far better insulation than smaller clusters and they also breathe a lot better. Which brings us to the fill in your down. It really is all about the fill power and the quality of that fill. The higher the fill power the stronger and larger the down clusters are.  To get the correct warmth you need to get the correct fill power – it’s that simple.

There is certainly something on the market to fit just about every budget. The higher priced comforters are made of pure good down that is hypoallergenic. Your budget will determine the quality of down comforter you can afford to buy.  If at all possible try to spend as much as possible on your comforter – it will reward you with years of warmth and usage. It really is a good investment!
Down comforters are available in all different weights and materials so you can easily choose the appropriate comfort level. When it comes to comfortable sleeping some people like it really warm and cuddle under layers of blankets while others crawl under a just a light blanket even when it’s minus twenty.

  • Quilts are made up of two layers of fabric that has the down place in the center and then it is held in place by sewn channels creating baffles which stop the feathers from shifting around. That means there won’t be any spots lacking feathers so you won’t get cold.
  • Eiderdown is said to be the warmest and rarest down in the entire world with an incredibly warm light weight body and a 100% silk exterior. Siberian down by Venus and Serinity is the best goose down on the market and the baffle box design compliments it nicely.
  • Thread count is also important. It is commonly referred to with sheets but it is also important to the fabric that’s going to cover those feathers. The higher the thread count the tighter the fabric is woven and the less chance of weathers escaping.

Down comforters are often found in luxury bedding stores but you can save substantially by purchasing online at one of the many sites that offer a wide variety of comforters to choose from.

About Down Comforter

There are a few things you need to know before you make your purchase. If you’re confused about what a down comforter is, let me explain.  Down is a highly desirable stuffing for a comforter because it is very light, holds in body heat while also allowing moisture to escape, and is very soft.

The purification process removes the dust and dirt from the down which is what typically bothers most allergy sufferers. If you are allergic to goose or duck feathers, you may still be able to own a down comforter. Look for a comforter that has down that has been purified, ideally purified several times.

Fill power  is a term you need to become familiar with if you are purchasing a down comforter. Fill power directly relates to the amount of warmth you will get from a down comforter and is also an indicator of the quality of the down.

The higher the fill power, the higher the quality of the down and the more warmth it provides. Also, the higher the fill power the more warmth you get with less weight. So higher fill power means more warmth, and more fluffiness while also having a comforter that is lightweight.
To find a down a down comforter that won’t have filling that shifts look for either baffling where the baffles are sewn through all the way or a comforter that has closed baffles or end-to-end baffles. If a comforter has closed baffles or end-to-end baffles the package will usually clearly state it.

A lower fill power comforter is nice in the summer or if you live in an area with a warm climate. But I’ve found that the 550 down comforter I own is comfortable in both the summer and the winter. And I live in a cooler climate. You don’t necessarily need a high fill power though. It depends on how much warmth you want. If you live in a cold area a high fill power comforter is nice to have in the winter.

When looking at duvet covers and some down comforters you may also notice the term “thread count” being mentioned frequently. Generally speaking, the higher the thread count, the softer and more luxurious the fabric. To keep your down comforter clean, cover it with a duvet cover. A duvet cover is like a cocoon for your comforter. Besides keeping your down comforter cleaner longer, a duvet cover offers you color and decorating options.

Owning a down comforter is a great little luxury. You don’t have to buy the most expensive down comforter to get a great quality product either. And if you take care of your comforter it can last for a long time, making it a good investment.
